The main thing is... (For me anyway) is the ability to burn a film to DVD....

It'll be hard to make an impulse purchase on a new film, that I can only watch on my Mac, or, until I spend a few hundred quid buying a new iPod or wireless streaming gizmo for my telly... (Something I'd prefer not to do)

Can we please burn them so we can watch films on normal DVD players!

Just like iTunes does with CD's. (Don't mind if there is a restriction on numbers that can be burnt etc. Only gonna do it once.)

Also, aren't laptop HD's gonna need to grow up to accomodate all this media? A desktop, easy, get an external, but I'd like me (New MacBook) laptop to be attachment free!

IMHO, it looks gorgeous. I'd love to have one...

I agree. Even though I would love a 4" screen, this one looks perfect for the current size of the iP4.

Hahaha! Wow! I thought I would never have a reason to share my media on a 360, but for security purposes, I should :) That is amazing and stupid on your neighbor's part. See, there's reason to invest in the $100 WiFi dongle. :D

Please do keep us posted. That may not enough for a warrant, but maybe having a cop visit either homes may be enough for someone to break. It is only down to two houses after all.

Wow, stealing WiFi AND a X-Box 360? Any laws in your area about stealing an internet connection? :D

I have already used 220GB on music / movie / photo
I dont want to use over 20 DVD DL to backup.... its terrible
so, give me Blu-ray disc please, Steve.

    currently, a BD-RW drive cost around $1000usd
if Mac equip with this monster drive, the price must increase by more or less $1000....so, does Apple waiting for a drop in price for drives?

Android is "closed"... an open system would be a Linux one where you can chop and change every part of the system right down to the kernel. Not gonna happen with mobile devices without hacking IMO.

    Agreed.
Plus Android devices seem loaded with uninstallable Google services.
But I don't trust Google's motives. When Android stands on its own then it might be something great.

Note that it doesn't say "The iTunes Music Store is being updated." That's a pretty clear sign to me that not only are they going to add movies, it's also now just going to be the iTunes Store.

Good catch, although it could mean nothing.

New investments in technologies and products would be by far the best use of the money. With Apple's cash, they could set up a research arm similar to Xerox PARC or the old Bell Labs and place themselves in the forefront of new technology for a long time. Instead, they seem to be notably stingy with their R&D dollars. Purchasing technologies by buying out smaller companies could also be advantageous, and Apple does do some of this, but not much -- not enough to make even a dent in their cash hoard.

I'm not so sure that Apple needs to re-invent the wheel all the time. It seems to me that Apple is (historically) pretty good at introducing new features, long before other PC manufacturers.

While I agree that a dedicated research arm could, in the long term, create a lot of great, innovative products and technologies, I think they have the possibility, if not properly run, to become cash cows that produce little or nothing of any profit-making value. Researchers have a way of remaining focused on research, not profits.

I still think that buying up other small, but influential companies such as Digidesign would be a great thing for Apple. Think of all the products that Apple currently sells that were bought, rather than developed in-house:

    iTunes
    Final Cut Pro
    Shake
    Logic (and, by extension, Garageband)
    LiveType

Heck, even MacOS X was, in many ways, 'bought' rather than developed by Apple.

Three new toys to own (MacBook Air, :apple:tv 2, and Time Capsule) plus an update for my existing toy - iPhone.

    Count me as pleased.

Now hopefully an MBP refresh will happen next Tuesday.

    whats next tuesday?

    @signalfile

i think theres little to no market for the cinema displays (except for people who are all things apple with alot of money)

they are way behind in LCD tech (still 700:1 contrast ratio)
no iSight (no big deal, but expected)
insanely expencive! $900 for a 23" CD or $550 for a 24" samsung with a higher contrast ratio, more features? etc.

there should atlease have been a price drop

OMG THEY MOVED THE ITUNES BUTTON ON THE IPHONE! WTF! IM GOING TO BE SO CONFUSED NOW!

Oh boy- the ignorance displayed in this forum sometimes can be staggering.

I bolded a key word in your quote. IMO

I'm not looking to stir anything up, so stop insinuating.

Just because I have a different opinion from you doesn't justify your annoying statement, "your act is wearing thin"

Really guy? I could care less about what you think so stop -__-

You certainly do come off as less than compassionate. That's for sure.

I heard somewhere that federal employees are not able to collectively bargain for their benefits package. If this is true, why are recent states' attempts to restrict unionized bargaining seen as being so draconian, and why isn't there an outcry to give federal employees the same "rights"?

The outcry, in this case, is the jail sentencing for striking.

I would ALSO have a lot of trouble with a G4 Quad.

Nevetheless, you can't say anything without actual thoughts, and not RANDOM ones. The G5 Quad you were using must have been misused by kids mucking around with it, not responsible users who take care of their machine.

I'm sure Aperture will run great on my Intel 1,66 Mini, with 2GB RAM

NOTICE THE OPERATIVE WORDS "I'm SURE" meaning... you don't know for sure. I'm telling you... I've tried it. I've asked YOU to try it. You will not be pleased with the results, just as I was not.

Sure kids may have been "mucking around" with the machine, but if a couple of kids messing with a computer is going to slow down the system, I assure you there will be problems in the future. If it's that slow on the current machine, what happens when 2.0 comes out? Do I choose not to upgrade or do I go through the whole upgrading of machines and software again?

As for another "RANDOM" thought... what does that mean, "responsible users who take care of their machine"? Unless you are tossing the machine around like a nerf soccer ball, spilling a can of Coke (not to be confused with Coke II) on it, jamming a 5 1/4" floppy in to the CD slot, or stuffing the USB ports with raisins, these things are pretty tough to break.

I love the software Apple makes. It looks great. The user interface is always top notch. It all makes sense. It just doesn't run very fast on their machines, at least not nearly as fast as the demos always show when Steve Jobs is giving us a sneak peek while dancing on stage in his turtle neck. It would be nice to have multiple versions of these apps so we could have the basic functions that actually perform at a speed that doesn't make the spinning rainbow come on after every click.

... "Apple seriously need to reconsider leaving out 3G and the ability to install software if they want to make it in the smart phone business", a phone that doesn't let you install new software is by definiton not a smart phone. ...I find this whole "Apple invented the smartphone" argument amusing. But your sentence there, in all its self-contradictory glory, gets to the heart of the matter. The word 'smartphone' preexisted the iPhone (by your own admission). So no matter what new features it had, and however much it revolutionized the market, the iPhone was not the first smartphone. Come up with a new word, maybe GeniusPhone. Apple likes the word 'genius'.

All you have shown is a deep-seated fear of advertising. And it's been stated that Apple doesn't actually collect this data, so it isn't even being used for iAds.

How exactly, specifically, will this cell phone tower tracking info compromise your personal safety? What exactly is there to fear? There must be something more than targeted advertising, which is at best an annoyance you have to live with anyway.

    17" iMac 2.0Ghz ordered 20 minutes ago.

A check off box at check-out enrolls me in Apple recycling program.

The $101 iMac discount becomes $93 in California because of a state imposed extra tax for new computer monitor purchases. $ goes to local dumps to help pay for the processing of dumped computer gear.

    monitor 4-14.9" $6 (MacBook)
    monitor 15-34.9" $8 (everything else)
    monitor >35" $10 (future iMacs?)

Apple does not offer all of its own apps in the app store. Is Final Cut Studio in the app store?

This requirement will have two effects

    (1) make the award irrelevant because everyone will know that the best apps were not even in the race and
    (2) Shows that Apple is greedy by asking others to do what they don't.

The way I imagine Apple liscensing/opening up the iPod/iTunes/iTMS system would be for Apple to completely control what the user sees, how the user gets content, even if it doesn't control what the user gets. Like how you can choose which country to set the Music Store to, adding maybe an Amazon.com store to the list, Real.com, etc. But as a "reward" for opening itself up to competition, Apple would recieve a slight liscence fee, an teensy bit of the price of whatever's sold. This way Apple could control the look of the iTMS no matter where it comes from by supplying a template, a "user interface guideline" sort of thing for this new multi-store, and all media from Apple or Amazon or wherever could all happily coexist in iTunes. If the other companies want to sell to players other than the iPod, they can use their own system or work out a similar situation with Microsoft and fair play and such.

I don't really like leaving this in the hands of DVD Jon. Maybe Apple will wait and see what kind of response he gets and then take it from there, but I think Apple and especially iTunes still need to be part of the picture.

Maybe Apple could simply provide an easy "Add to Library" handle in iTunes, even if the stuff comes from some browser based store, you buy it and it goes to iTunes and thus the iPod. The whole multi-store thing is to me the ideal that I'd be willing to let go of.

    Max_Walker

That's no industry setting price point. For that price you can buy the DVD. watch it, load it on your ipod and the sell it on e-bay.
