...does this Folding project help at all with diabetes?
not listed as a current study by stanford, but all folding research will help advance all knowledge of related disease. diabetes has been linked to mis-folded proteins, and work is ongoing by other universities. LINK (http://www.curingdeath.com/Research/Problems_with_insulin_folding_may_lead_to_diabetes.asp) to one of the more current results.
thanks for folding.

An Airport reliability fix for Intel iMacs would be nice. Too many threads on that one here. Goodness knows what Apple Discussions is like.
Mhm yeah, they definitely still haven't got Intel Mac airport sorted properly. My Mac mini worked like a charm until 10.4.8 as well, it was definitely that which screwed mine up!
Still, I doubt that'll be mentioned today.

My Flash site is almost 2 meg in size and is taking forever to load.
I'm an illustrator/designer, so it's very image intensive.
My friend who has designed it and myself keep trying to shave bits off the picture sizes, and compress the output, but I'd really appreciate any sneaky tips on how to get the filesize down on a flash website!!
Any ideas....?

Can you do it? Yes
Should you do it? No
Maybe I'm ignorant on this but let me ask, does Apple care?
Apple is a hardware company, they make software for the primary purpose of selling hardware. Premium hardware I might add. I didn't think that they relied on an "honor" system for Snow Leopard installs. As long as you are installing it on Apple hardware, aren't giving it out publicly and keeping "in-house", they don't care do they?
That has been their clear philosophy with all other software that they sell (i.e. iTunes and App store)
Although I purchased a copy of Snow Leopard, I only partially read the license. I didn't see anything preventing that but it could be in there.
Apple is not like Microsoft. Microsoft on the other hand is software company, they only sell software. Therefore, they want every dime from every copy. Apple makes over 90% of their money from hardware.
I doubt Apple cares about squeezing $29 out of you for another install for your mother. You buddy down the street, yes. Not your mother. It goes against everything else that they are doing. If it is wrong, it's in the same category as driving 60 in a 55 as far as I'm concerned.
EDIT: I assume that your mother Mac is purely for personal use.

That looks like my first guitar ( the OP's) , and as somebody already said here, if you can learn to play on a wider neck other guitars seem easier to play, IMHO.

I have a C2D mini and a quad Xeon Dell Poweredge (linux) sitting idle most of the day.
Anyone know how to run folding on them with an override when I need them and am away from home?
I am sure my whole setup would get smoked by a PS3, but I would love to help if I can.

This is all speculation, as I don't even run the program, but here goes: The only reason I can imagine they would use MPI at the client side as opposed to threading it is that they are already using MPI to communicate back with the main servers. If this is the case, it would be relatively easy (from a learning-curve point of view) to continue on toward using this to communicate at the client side. If you're a grad student who's never written anything multithreaded, it's easier to stick with what you know than to experiment with something new. Likewise, going the multiprocess w/MPI route, you don't have to worry about shared memory or mutexes, so it's easier for the noob programmer to implement. Otherwise, I see no tangible benefit for using MPI like this.
I wrote cluster software with lammpi before I ever began writing multithreaded apps. I can attest that the MPI route takes less brain power. The multithreading route may be simpler to code, but there's a lot more to think about. Even in the professional field, I was the only person at my previous company who was not afraid of multithreading.
It's too bad that they probably won't be able to use Apple's grand central among other tech/tools since it would seem to be a really good way to go, but I can understand them not using it since they have to write for windows first...

yes you can
Install the new drive, put the OS X disk in and it should boot. After you choose your language, you will need to use Disk Utility to format the blank drive. After the format, you can carry on with the OS X install as normal.

Try this thread. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31091) It's a discussion about setting up the security features in Linksys routers.
Basically, you're going to do two things: one, turn on WEP encryption, to keep your data secure; and two, disable SSID broadcasting, to prevent just any schlub with a wireless card from seeing your network.
These two things won't make your network hack-proof, but it's enough to keep out the casual network snoopers and enough to tell more advanced snoopers "This is a closed network, look elsewhere for an easier target."

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hope):
Hope is the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life. .... In some faiths and religions of the world, hope plays a very important role. Hope can be passive in the sense of a wish, or active as a plan or idea, often against popular belief, with persistent, personal action to execute the plan or prove the idea.
From Merriam Webster (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hope):
Definition of HOPE
1 archaic : trust, reliance
2 a: desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfillment <came in hopes of seeing you>; also : expectation of fulfillment or success <no hope of a cure>
b: someone or something on which hopes are centered <our only hope for victory>
c: something hoped for
[/LIST]
Does hope affect or impact you?
Philosophers have debated this topic for centuries, but what say you? Does the concept of hope even apply in today's world or is it an archaic notion that is no longer needed or useful?
I'm not just asking the question from a theoretical perspective, but also a personal one. Do you have hope in someone or something that is a part of your everyday life and if so how does that impact you?
_________________________________________
For me personally, hope is an integral part of my life. I am a person of faith and hope in my beliefs is foundational to everything I do. Additionally, as a therapist I believe in people's free will and their ability to change things in their life for the better. Hope is a vital part of the therapeutic process.

Pretty loud is pretty much an understatement.
Though the G5 XServe we have is marginally quieter than some of its Poweredge brothers and sisters, it is still comparing a jet taking off to a slightly smaller jet taking off.

you may wanna brush up on your CSS a little edesignuk, you would be surprised what CSS can control
mind you, IE doesnt support some tags, but CSS can do everything from onfocus to simple IF statements (firefox supports on focus of textbox while IE doesnt, inwhich case you would check the browser version and implement javascript for onfocus where IE doesnt support it from CSS)
i have had a hard time controlling form elements in safari, but i havent spent much time with safari as my primary concern. we dev primarily for firefox, then for IE and check to make sure stuff works in safari. thats just the way we have prioritized the browsers
il stop here as to not turn this into a flame war, but theres quite a few books on CSS if your a bit behind times. you should also know theres different CSS versions.

Hello people,
I've been using iMovie 09 for some time now to make small youtube videos. I found the new iMovie to be a bit annoying to work with, but now I'm even disappointed. I can't seem to find any decent video effects. There are some that add overlays (like the ones in Photobooth) but nothing as much as iMovie HD.
Are there some decent freeware plugins out there? I looked around with aid of Google and found nothing but commercial :(
Or perhaps there is a way to import the iMovie HD effects into iMovie 09?
I like the way iMovie 09 manages my clips, so I rather stay in there than in iMovie HD. Right now I edit partially in both for my more demanding clips (wanted to make a small video with distorted static over the screen).
Many thanks in advance :)
Cheers,
Thedutchjelle

I got a new iPhone and want to give my son my 3GS. The guy at Best Buy said I should be able to move his sim card from his 3G to my 3GS and all the info would switch over.
When I move the sim card the 3GS activates but still has my contacts, etc. even though it is his sim card. Help??

I have NEVER gotten Windows Media movies of any sort to play within Safari. In fact, anything not handled by QuickTime has never played inside of Safari for me.
really? I've had WMV play in Safari before, the only sites which don't work for me are NBC's. But, others (can't think of them off the top of my head) have worked in the past. I have the newest version on windows media player installed
