My friend keeps taunting me with his Core 2 Duo based HP notbook. Even "Xtreme Notebooks" has a Core 2 Duo model.

    This sucks.

Your friend sounds like a dork. "OOOH, my HP has a Core 2 Duo! I AM SO l33t!"

    Give me a break.

Are you sure? Many people cannot find more than about 3 billion US $.

Depends on how you hide things, I guess.

No need to hide what you don't have.

Your concerns are understood. My question is: how does this differ from having your wallet or credit card stolen? Amazing that we'll secure our computers up tightly to prevent online security breaches but we'll let the sketchy-looking waiter walk away with our credit card in the restaurant.....

OK - I admit that I can a certain tendency toward paranoia :o, but...

With respect to credit cards, most eating places where I am in the UK bring a machine to the table rather than taking the card away. A PIN is required. Also, one can erase or cover the 3-digit number on the back so that you reduce the chances of your stolen card being used online. My worry is that the RFID will be so automatic ('convenient') that you'll be able to wave your phone to purchase goods or services, without any other conformation of your identity. And it is true that security so far on RFID is far from perfect: indeed, one can now purchase shielded passport covers that reduce the chance of criminal access to sensitive passport information via RFID .

EDIT: Also, didn't O2 trial something called 'Wallet' that allowed a mobile phone to be used to buy things? I wonder how the trial turned out...

I'm going to go out on a limb and postulate that the next release won't be iOS5, nor will the next phone be iPhone 5. Reason being, as someone already stated in the forums a few days ago, this release is more likely to be iterative--evolutionary, not revolutionary. The new design of iPhone 4 will stand, and the only changes outwardly might be the screen. Everything else is inside.

I think '5' is a catchy number, and Apple will reserve it for the 2012 iPhone. We'll see a whole new, magical iOS5 and with it, iPhone 5! Dun, dun, duuuuun!!! (or should I say, BOOM!)

I think you'll see iOS4.5 with all these cool little tweaks to the UI (and I REALLY hope improvements to notifications), and the new iPhone 4NS (New Screen or some such) in September.

You could also either link to or copy the information from www.apple-history.com. It has the specs for (as far as I know) all old Apple products, but is seldom updated, so if we put everything here, then we would have a more up-to-date, all-in-one database.

I'll second that, no intel 3000 will be entering my house
And I doubt that there will be a backlit keyboard again. As I said in the last thread apple took it out for a reason not for fun

And that reason was? Thinness? Cost? Do you have any evidence to back this up?

I think it was simple economics - take out the BL keyboard to get the cost under $999 and keep the margins at 30%.

However, as tech gets more mature, and the R&D Cost is recouped for the new design, I think they can re-add the BL Keyboard w/o sacrificing the $999 Price-point or the 30% margins.

As you said, it wasn't just "for fun", but "for profit" and if they can maintain that profit, and return a marquee feature like the BL Keyboard, why not?

Sorry, I wasn't trying to change what you said or anything, I was just using what you said (that the list would become quite long) as a reason for why we should reduce the total amount of articles by merging articles wherever possible.

I'm not sure that reducing category sizes is a good reason to merge articles. We shouldn't do anything that makes it harder to find something within an article once you're there, especially since categories are just one way to find articles - in fact, just 2% of page views in the Guides (of actual content pages, excluding things like the search page) are for viewing one of the root level categories.

They're split off from the main software category because of the perception that a lot of users may not want to look at the Terminal... it does reduce the amount of articles in the main software category.

I wasn't the one who created the Terminal Commands category, but I'd be very surprised if that was the reason it was created. Again, these articles are in a different category because it's a logical grouping - no different to similar categories such as Games and Networking and Internet Software. As someone who uses the Terminal extensively, I find it much more useful this way.

I am a child of the eighties, well really a teenager, but anyway, my freshman year of college (1987) all I wanted was a Macintosh Plus. It was THE computer to have. For me. Everyone else was drooling over 8088's but I was drooling over the Mac. That's what I wanted. I never did get it, (until last year that is) but the seed was planted.

I went on to own 286, 386, 486 , pentium, k62, and pentium III machines. I loved that I could build a machine myself and decide what went into it. I've built every machine I have used since 1998 (before that I just bought 'em). Despite the freedom I've grown tired of it. There is nothing worse than spending 600-1000 on a new setup only to have something not work with something else. Be it video drivers, or a nic. etc. I began looking and drooling over macs again when the iMac came out. Amelio's beige boxes did absolutely nothing for me. But when Steve came back, WOAH!

I was thrilled when windows xp came out. I beta tested windows Me and watched it go from super stable to a high overhead crash-prone mess. Beta testing XP I thought that MS had finally gotten it right. But I quickly realized they hadn't. The windows registry is the weakest link on my system. It becomes increasingly unstable over time (just like windows 9x) and eventually brings the whole system down. To fix it, I've got to reformat and start over. I have learned to partition my drive so everything that I wouldn't want to lose is in it's own partition away from the OS. With OS X, that practice is a thing of the past.

I have also tried linux and liked it, though I found the learning curve very daunting. (the feeling of accomplishment when all was up and running was great, though--anyone remember trying to get your soundblaster to work?? Make?, bash?....whew) When I first read about OS X it got my attention. I watched the quicktime videos of the dock and minimizing a window etc. Then I used it. Finally somebody really had gotten it right. And not for the eye candy. You can be incredibly productive with just the GUI or you can fully exploit the command line. It's as powerful as you wish it to be.

Because I have gone back to school to become a programmer, I will keep my pc around for the occasional time when I can't get virtual pc to run a program on my Mac or when running a program is just too slow. But that's the only reason. I gladly left the windows world and I haven't looked back. I'm glad to finally be where I should have been all those years ago.

I've just installed Lion on a blank drive on a new Air and this is in Software Update. I'm definitely running DP2 as it says in the dialog. Is this telling me to update to something I already have or is there a DP3 I haven't heard about?
    http://i.imgur.com/06l8O.png
It's just a minor (supposedly, not enough people have looked into the deeper changes) upgrade, nothing much new - though you do have to use Xcode 4.1 DP 3 to make applications after updating. Guess that counts... sorta. :P

yeah I can see his point.
However there will be efforts to make it like a pc through accessorizing the device

Well said and that is a good thing, but at least not when it comes to UI. That is where to me Windows fails every time.

If you have nothing setup it will use DHCP to get your DNS from whatever device is providing you your IP address. For most people this would be a DSL or cable modem which is passing the DNS servers from their ISP.

So not setting it up is not an issue, unless your ISPs DNS servers suck.
Frequently, I find the modem also has nothing set. Changing to any known DNS server speeds things up. You probably already did this years ago, you are a geek, no?
But how do you know if it sucks? How do you know if Google's DNS servers are actually an improvment for you? You can't know until you test. There are several DNS test utilities you can download that will measure this for you and tell you. I highly suggest people not assume that using Google's DNS servers is always best. For some people it will actually perform worse. Test to know for sure.
I agree, I never said anything about Google DNS or to not include some thought in the process. What I said is most people have a mess that should be addressed. Whenever I see, "internet is slow", I think, "check your DNS".

I don't have much time right now (I'm kind of in class at the moment) but I think I figured out how to edit categories, just edit the category page like any normal page, I'm going to test it out with a new category later when I have more time to figure out how to delete my test category after creating it (yes I'm very new to wiki editing).

Anybody care to confirm this before 4:30 PM Pacific time and save me some trouble?

Well, the Xoom isn't tied to the carrier. Google uses it (currently, at least) as the reference device for their Honeycomb platform.

I think iPad 2 and iOS has advantages, but as an Apple supporter myself and user/dev owner, too, I think the hubris in this community is very dangerous.

The bigger they are, the higher they fly...you know how the saying goes. The U2 wasn't untouchable, and neither is the iPad 2. The sooner we get over this idea that there is an inherent superiority anything Apple, I really think the better off Apple and its products and the ecosystem actually will be!

Ever since Android was released on phones I have been hearing that it "is just a release or two away from being a great OS". The reality is that most Android devices are extremely lucky if they get one upgrade ported to them by their carrier. I'll stick with an iPad2 rather than buying something and hoping that it improves with time.

Something made in the US, either a Camaro or a Challenger. I'm waiting to see if there is a glimmer of hope that Dodge makes a convertible Challenger next year.

Neither of those are assembled in the US. They are both the product of The Peoples' Democratic Revolutionary Socialist Province of Ontario.

Has no one else thought of the security implications of this? They are allowing people to connect complex computer devices to the electronics system of an airplane. What is to stop someone from writing a virus that would infiltrate the plane's computers and cause it to crash? With all the crazy precautions they take regarding toothpaste, it's hard to see how they could miss the obvious.

The systems are now starting to show up in retail today, and some people have posted pictures to give some scale to things. Here is the new 360 between the older 360 and the older PS3. It isn't exactly battling the Wii for smallest console, but it is a decent amount smaller...

Haven't heard anyone mention about the email performance of .mac. I have two accounts and you can never depend on email arriving promptly. I've sometimes waited several hours for email to show up.
