    Ok ignore my ignorance.....

but my computer is on 24h a day, I never turn it off, so it would make sense for me to help the MR cause. I have tried setting it up before but it never 'did' anything. Help?

whats your machine? are you capable and comfortable with terminal controls? or need a GUI lol

you can read more Here (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ)

Anyone else thinks that Apple is readying the merger between iOS and MacOSX, at last?

I mean, why would the OSX get sliders instead of buttons (-> finder, etc)? And how would otherwise be the file-sharing in a cloud-centric iOS possible?

    Looking quite forward to it!

What remains to clear how they would deal with the custom Apple ARM vs Intel chipsets programming issue (just as ppc and intel?), programming of apps (.app vs .ipa) ...

Oh, a lot more remains to be clear than that. Like the fact that MacOS X and iOS have completely different UI layers, Window managers, input methods, memory systems, etc.

People often think a few UI elements are all that make up the OS, but there is so much more happening under the hood, and in the way the user interacts with the machine, that it's pretty clear that a merge between desktop and touch-based OSes are a loooong way off, if ever.

I don't believe the stats. There is no way the Verizon model is more popular than the AT&T model.

here are some good references to get a grasp of the differences. As others have stated, the lens is the same focal length, but on a smaller sensor body (APC), the image is essentially "cropped". Some websites..

    Site #1 (http://www.extremeinstability.com/topic-full-frame.htm)

    Site #2 (http://www.petapixel.com/2010/10/02/full-frame-vs-crop-sensor-comparison/)

    Site #3 (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/canon-lenses/field-of-view-crop-factor.aspx)

The second site is a video that is nice. 3rd site has good info.

It is funny HOW NO ONE clicked on these links. It has all the info here, and you can see what the differences are... or people can just keep arguing.

If the MBP's or other hardware is not updated at this event, then when is the next public event to have this happen?

Note that you don't need a public event. Remember, the iMacs were upgraded with Core 2 Duo processors silently. And if I remember correctly, the last time the MBP was updated (with the processor speedbumps from 1.83 and 2.0 to 2.0 and 2.16), it was silent as well.

A little off topic, but question for those who need Office software, and also run Parallels/Fusion: Do you prefer Office For Mac, or do you prefer to run "regular" Office in Parallels/Fusion? Thanks.

I used to run Office 2004 on Mac and Office 2003 on Parallels and much preferred Office 2003. The main issue was the ease of looking at the screen in Excel on the 2004 version - particularly how it highlighted (poorly) the cell you were in..

I have now upgraded to Office 2011 on Mac and now only use that. It is much improved. I won't be buying the Windows version.

Maybe I'm just too old school, but I'm a bit resentful of the fact that it's touted as a priviledge to have the opportunity to pay $2 to watch a missed TV show. I hope I'm wrong, but having joined the HDTV crowd about 6 months ago, I'm struggling to find a way to do what I've always been able to do for free in the past -- record a TV show at the same quality it was piped in to my home in the first place.

Tivo isn't free either, I just can't justify paying the monthly subscription fee. Apple's solution seems to potentially cost even more. I don't see this as progress. :(

But all those chicklet sized buttons just look like a crazed Bedazzler-wielding mom attacted an innocent cell phone.

This was the funniest thing I've read all week.

I've been in insurance training, and in addition to financial people, there's been some, uh, "Desparate Housewives" getting their insurance licenses, and I'm picturing them passing around a poor phone and a bedazzler during class now.

Are you suggesting it is harder to abort than to raise a child?

Oh no, you cant get away with logic like that here, especially as you are male.

Men should just butt-out of this discussion altogether, IMNSHO.

Yes. Jamie got his to a mirror shine. Almost looked like a marble :p

I bet it didn't smell like a marble...

But back to Office. I still prefer the Windows version however the Mac version is starting to grow on me. Were it not for MS CRM that I use at work, I could finally be rid of Windows once and for all. But, alas, no dice. Love how CRM works ONLY with IE.

I agree the windows version is way better. But it's not worth running Parallels all the time to get it. The Mac version is good enough. (At work I do run Parallels all the time for other reasons, though, and I therefore I almost exclusively use the Windows version of Office.)

... sooo, a thermocouple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermocouple) on a chip? Thermocouples have horrendous efficiency. I don't see how a such a chip in an enclosed environment (like a laptop motherboard) can achieve enough of a thermal gradient to produce enough current to be useful.

    I dunno, i'm skeptical.

Skeptical you should be, but these aren't really thermocouples. The same physical principle applies, but thermocouples are really only for temperature measurement. These are thermoelectric coolers. See here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peltier-Seebeck_effect).

If you want to power the temperature change yourself, you need a high current. But if you want to generate electricity from them, then just connect them into a circuit with out any powersupply i.e. stick a fan's power terminals on that, stick one side of the TEC on a hot chip or cup of tea etc. to setup the delta T. (temp difference) then the fan will start spinning!

    Dan :-)

While what you're saying is true in principle, I seriously doubt the practicality of what you're suggesting. TECs are moderately efficient at converting electricity into a temperature differential (or being used as a heat pump), but their efficiency in the other mode of operation (Seebeck effect) is very, very low (typ. < 5%). If you take a chip-sized (~ 1 cm^2) TEC, connect it between a hot processor core at 100 C and ambient temperature at 25 C, you will not have enough power to turn a computer fan at any modest speed. Furthermore, even if you could harvest that electricity and store it, the added energy would be less than 0.1% of a typical laptop battery.

If you wanted to use a larger TEC module (say 16 cm^2) on top of the 80 C CPU case, then the added energy would be less than 1%.

Estimates based on info here (http://www.ferrotec.com/technology/thermoelectric/thermalRef13.php).

It was obvious that the Intel switch was going to be a fantastic move for Apple. My Apple hating friends have bought or are planning to buy C2D iMacs. I knew Apple got it right when one guy who constantly hated Apple said on MSN messenger "I'm in OSX, it's too dangerous online in Windows". I wasn't planning on buying a new Mac for a long time but the Bootcamp ability lets me get back to work on making games and making money. Another mate of mine wants an iMac because they're slim, cheap and very quiet and was impressed as hell when we made a DVD in a few minutes with all our adventure video and photographs.

    Intel, you are ****ing legends.

All that matters is what games you like. Halo, Gears? Get a 360. inFamous, LBP? Get a ps3.

The 360 has tons more shooters, but the ps3 has it beat in variety, imo. With titles like the aforementioned inFamous, LBP, as well as The Last Guardian, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, etc theres a lot more variety than the 360 can offer. Of course none of that matters if you like what the 360 has more.

...It's pretty incredible if you ask me, your out just like that. If only I could go to sleep that well every night...
As I understand it the drugs they use are poisons and the job of the anestisiologist (?) is to give you just enough to nearly kill you and keep that dose constant throughout the op, so your more dead than asleep.
Probably best not to try and fight with the guy trying very hard to not-quite-kill-you!

Off-topic comment, but still related to external storage.

I received my Mac mini around noon, and I found something the previous (at least the GMA950 Core 2 Duo) model didn't support: USB flash storage works when connected to a side USB port of the aluminium Apple keyboard. My older Mac mini complains about lacking power via that USB port but the new one works just fine!

Oh wow, the corded ones have a usb jack? I only have the wireless one. Neat!

It's too bad really, but he doesn't look long for this world. No one that skinny is healthy. My guess is that the last few months have been spent in trying to put some weight on the guy. Chemo therapy cannot be given to someone who is already too weak......
    I hope I'm wrong.

Funny you should say that, because the company that designed the original 360 (and presumably this new redesign) is also the company that designs stuff for Alienware...

    http://www.astrostudios.com/projects/archive/?all=1#

    Lol, thats funny.

I dont understand why MS would put a huge vent on top of the unit. Dust will clog the fans like crazy, and with the 360's horrid stability record i would be very nervous laying it down flat on my shelf.

And so it begins - this is the first of only many apps that are going to be written to work with Intel chip sets only, I'm afraid. I am, however, somewhat taken aback that they appeared this early from a major software company.

Perhaps there have been others, but I've not seen anything myself released which didn't have a PPC version available or was UB until now.

I always have to laugh a bit about American politics, on one side you have the liberal bunch working hard destroy the country economically, on the other side you got religious crackpots working hard to destroy the country socially.

Humans should have the full right to decide over their own bodies, that includes planned parenthood and abortions.
